Dell inspiron 5490 is an amazing laptop! I had to wait about 17 days to get it but it was totally worth it! The laptop is VERY sleek and compact. I have gotten many compliments on it already. The full Aluminum build feels premium and sturdy. The build quality is nothing to be scoffed at. It can rival a far more premium MacBook.
The fingerprint reader is supported by Windows Hello and the keyboard is pretty good. The battery lasts about 7-8 hours easily if you reduce the brightness accordingly and are doing light work (Microsoft office, coding, etc.). I have gotten over 8 hours from it even though I was using virtual machines and coding.
It is incredibly light. I don’t even feel like I have a laptop in my backpack. I am using Ubuntu in dual boot with windows and everything works perfectly (even the keyboard backlight) except the fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader is not supported by Ubuntu. But that is to be expected.
The performance is amazing because the processor is decently powerful and the SSD makes all the difference. Nothing lags. I run multiple virtual machines in both Windows and Ubuntu and compile heavy code all the time without any problems.
Overall, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this laptop. The specs and the build quality you’re getting for this price is incredible. Make sure you select the free Microsoft Office Student license if you’re buying this during Diwali and claim the Sennheiser headphones offer.
i need your advise:
i need the laptop for coding basicically shell scripting and devops purpose, is this laptop fine, or i should go with lenovo s340 in that 256ssd +1tb hdd is there at same price. other specs are same, i5/10 gen/8gb ram
just curious about this laptop as it has only 512 gb space( ssd), so i might lack space or i can use pd/external Hard disk for extra data?
The harddrive failed within 30 days of purchase. Dell can only give repaie options or maximum they can give you a same refurbished laptop in exchange. So make a wise decision.
INSPIRON (14) 5490 2020
Got delivered the Dell inspiron 5490 after 15 days of order. The laptop’s keyboard is the worst. It was totally irresponsible when i opened the laptop for the first time. The keys are so fragile and definitely a no go for anyone who wants to type more. Within 24 hours 3 service request has been raised by me and it would take another 7 days to resolve. I havent used by laptop for 5 min and have to wait for another 10 days for a tecnicial to replace the part(keyboard) in my just delivered laptop. One of the very poorly thought Exterior by Dell.
what is difference between 5490 and 5590?
5490 has an 14inch screen…5590 has an 15inch screen…
15.6 inches and 14 inches
any heating issue in this laptop model?
Is that u r facing any issue with this leptop?
If yes then plz tell me
And according to you which one is good
Dell Vostro 3480(i3 8th gen) or Dell Inspiron 14 5490(i3 10gen) for students?
Inspirion is higher one levevel.
on a very heavy usage this model is not creating any issue so go for it. Its worth. It heats up a bit sometimes but not that to be worried of
Dell inspiron 14 5490 has Intel’s 10th generation processor I remember the heating issues started decreasing from Intel’s 3rd Generation processors and this one is 10th Gen.
Hi. I bought this laptop for studying/programming. I want to install ubuntu (dual boot), and you already said its kinda difficult. My dell comes with Windows 10 Pro installed. Can u explain a little bit more how to do it please? Thanks anyways.
Battery is 6-7 hours. Build quality is good but you can feel flex with little force applied.
hows the built quality and battery life???
This device’s 51Wh battery seems to provide quite a lot of screen on time – 16 hours and 20 minutes of Web browsing and 15 hours and a half of video playback.
What is the overall quality of this laptop and what parts are made of metals a d what are made of plastic and how is the plastic quality and any keyboard and any heating issue or any issue you find and at last your suggestion to buy or not? For a programmer and for some animation creations?? Pls reply sir!!!
For animation creation, go with integrated graphics card

Absolutely top notch….!!
I have been using dell Inspiron 5490 for the past two days, this laptop has changed the way I use my pc, i3 10 gen processor and 512gb SSD. These two things make the laptop’s speed and performance amazing, the 14-inch Full HD screen is very sharp, bright and high quality. Look, fill can’t express it in words.

Bang for a buck Dell Inspiron 14 5490
After about 25 days usage, I would like to say it is one of the best laptops in 60k range available.
Fingerprint scanner-✓
Full HD glare and touch proof screen✓
512GB SSD✓
Dell connect is one application which I use the most.
Starting and Shut down time less than 10 seconds. In addition to it we get McAfee Multidevice antivirus which is great.
Just one issue, heating and the night scenes are not visible until Full brightness.
Other than these, The best Laptop at this price.
can you please confirm , it’s body made of metal or hard plastic ?
Hard plastic

Decent compact notebook laptop
First the positives. The laptop is lightweight, compact, portable and fast. It is quite good for daily usage and to work with word, excel and similar documentation and to browse the internet, watch pictures and/or videos and the sound quality is good. The fingerprint scanner is a hit or miss and not always working 100%. The battery backup is decent and again OK for day-to-day stuff. The backlit keyboard is average and not the best around and feels a bit and rigid hard to type. On to the problems, one that has commonly stayed with most of the Dell laptops over the years (I owned a Dell XPS15 before), is the heating. It gets hot quickly and stays quite warm most of the time. (even in cool mode). In spite of Dell taking so many measures to improve the thermal management of their flagship laptops/notebooks, it is still mediocre to say the least. If it runs this temperatures continuously, I doubt how long the battery will last. But I hope it gets better with future updates. But for this, the laptop is overall OK and will recommend this for a normal daily usage.

Review for Design and construction of Dell Inspiron 5490:
This laptop is mostly made out of plastic. So, keep in mind that its body is highly scratchable, so you might want to keep sharp objects away from it. however, the laptop lid is aluminum and a couple of millimeters and some 130 grams of the overall weight of the device.
The Inspiron 14 5490 laptop happens to be another notebook whose lid can not be opened with a single hand. However, we can find a mild change around the display. Instead of putting a couple of rubber feet to prevent it from slapping flat on the base and eventually scratching the display, Dell has made an entire plastic rim around it. This should provide more stability… we guess. Another thing that is introduced is the mechanism that a lot of manufacturers implement nowadays – the lid is used as a lever that lifts the base to increase the breathing space for the fan.
Pros and Cons of Dell Inspiron 5490 Laptop Model:
Pros
Tremendous battery life
Upgradable memory and storage that supports PCIe x4 SSDs
Very fast fingerprint reader
Equipped with a MicroSD card slot
Its display has comfortable viewing angles and good contrast ratio (BOE NV14N4H-2X30K (BOE082E))
Cons
Its base bends upon the slightest of touches
Lacks an RJ-45 connector, unlike its predecessor
Covers only 51% of sRGB (BOE NV14N4H-2X30K (BOE082E))
Uses aggressive PWM for brightness adjustment (BOE NV14N4H-2X30K (BOE082E)) (our Health-Guard profile deals with this issue)

Good laptop
So far so good. It feels and looks premium and very speedy and responsive. The keyboard is good and screen looking great, very sharp and there are colour settings to change the temperature of the screen. Small laptop, it is slim and light, looks better in person than in the pictures or YouTube videos I have seen of this laptop. Bold and clean white and silver design makes it stand out and look premium.
Great laptop for students, due to its size and sleek design. I will primarily use it for my computer science degree. It took exactly 2 weeks to deliver the laptop.
The fans when I first got the laptop were very loud when I opened up Nvidia’s control centre. After a few updates the fans have quitened down. The cooling on this laptop is not great. Light web browsing makes the laptop keyboard top left to get hot. Hot air is blown out onto the screen through the exhaust fans and have notices the bottom of the screen gets hot to the touch. For a brand new laptop in 2019, I expected the thermals to be better but I nothing has broken yet. I would recommend to get a longer warranty just in case.
Battery life is also something that isn’t the best of a laptop at this pricepoint, expect around 4-5 hours, which is fine for me. There is no Thunderbolt 3 port while I was told by a Dell sales advisor there is.

Simple, Sleek, Powerfull
–>Does a great job for daily surfing, youtube and document editing.
Not preferrable for “Gaming experience” – Gets pretty hot without MX250, go for G3 series.
This build is aptly suited for On the go work but it can take some content editing / simulations but not gaming.
**>>Everyone knows the below details,
10th Gen i5, 8GB, 512GB SSD, 14inch, barely heavy(>To surprise with it has the following

Backlit keys(dont expect Mac/thinkpad levels)
Out of description it is chargeable with a Type-C 65W charger too.

i bought the one with 10th gen i7, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD, it was awesome. i’m really satisfied despite some minor heating issues. so pleased that later i bought another one for my wife, same model but cheaper one with 10th gen i5, 4GB RAM, 1TB SATA. it was a different experience altogether! just setting up the laptop with programs my wife usually use is frustrating. lagging keyboard input, slow transition in between opened windows to name a few. if you want the best performance go for the higher specs.
I work at Dell and let me clarify a few things. Inspiron is our consumer entry level laptop. Vostro, XPS, G-Series and Alienware are higher category and all ranked in our consumer category.
Precision, Latitude .. they are our business series.
Someone said Inspiron 5490 has almost the same build quality as MacBook Pro .. wrong, MacBook Pro uses Aluminium in their chassis and much better build quality, something that XPS and Latitudes match.
5490 had major issues with battery timing, and keyboard .. several warranty cases. If you believe it’s the best laptop, think again.
5000 series has made progress in 5502 (15”) and 5402 (14”) in terms of overcoming previous issues with hearing, battery and keyboard. The design is much better with ergonomics and heat flow.
