Amazing machine for this long time gamer!
I have waited years to buy an Alienware laptop. I finally made the choice to buy the M17 R3. I have the Intel i7-10750H and Nvidia RTX 2070. This laptop is fantastic. It plays buttery smooth. Is very snappy and responsive. And it is amazing looking and feeling. The build quality is some of the best I have seen. The improved cooling technology is definitely cooling better than the last generation. I only have a few mild concerns. First is that the fans are a little loud at times and throttle up and down frequently, but let’s be honest, asking a machine this thin and light with these hardware specs to be quiet and cool isn’t realistic so the solution is wear headphones when gaming. My second complaint is the Alienware Command Center Software that controls the fans, overclocks, and RGB lighting needs to be taken back to formula. It is very unintuitive and difficult to use, but with a little patience and trial and error, you can eventually achieve the results you were looking for. My third concern is that the system memory is soldered to the mother board and cannot be upgraded so be sure to order the configuration with the memory you need or you may end up disappointed. Overall I still give this gaming laptop a high rating and solid review. I recommend it and have enjoyed my time with it.

My house burned down but my m17R3 didn’t!
This will sound hard to believe but my home burned down on Thursday last. At around 3.20 AM, what seems to have been an electrical fault started a fire in my home. I got out with my wife thanks to my dogs. within 20 minutes the house I knew was gone.We had lost everything. Local fire crews fought the blaze for 8 hours before they could suspend the operation. I was humbled by their efforts and the support from neighbours and family. The next day I learned that a computer and a small alarm clock had been salvaged. I wasn’t sure which computer it was but when I went to collect I was pretty happy to see the m17 . It was covered in soot and it smells like an old campfire but its perfect and I’m typing this on it now. I was just happy that my wife and my dogs were safe but it was cool to see this unit survive out of everything in the house. I had been blown away by half life Alyx on the m17 and will again some day I get a headset . Its definitely a great built machine and prior to its miraculous survival I would have recommended it anyway.

Solid laptop, excels at both gaming and productivity
The Alienware M17 R3 with the RTX 2080 Super max-p as well as 4K display is an excellent gaming laptop, consistently hitting 30% greater 4K FPS over the other 17″ 4K laptops with RTX 2080 Super max-q. It also is an excellent productivity machine, excelling at software development workflows. Its flat matte display, rather than high gloss on the Razer Blade, makes for excellent use in all lighting situations and its keyboard is phenomenal – I true joy to type on. It also is incredibly comfortable and solid to carry, having a great feel. Its supposed weakness, the response rate of the panel, is not apparent in any 4K gaming so far. I am absolutely pleased with this laptop.

Beautiful looking, thin laptop, very fast, BUT fan is too loud
Great PC, beautiful colors, cool lights, it’s thin, pretty small for this kind of performance, fast, well built. The only issue is the fan. Even in quiet mode, while only basic apps are opened, it runs all the time. On 30% speed, it makes whistle like noise, on higher speed sounds like an aircraft. I’ve had 2 Alienware laptops before, none of them was making such a noise. If you don’t mind louder fans, this is right for you.

Computer shutdown in middle of game when battery show was hot.
I just receive this laptop and use it about 2-3 times. I was playing LOL and in the middle of my rank game when it shutdown by itself. When I try to turn it back on game ended in lost. The reason for the shutdown was the battery was hot. I had my laptop plugged in just so I don’t have that problem. However, this laptop does itself whether you have it plug in or not. Is there a way to prevent this? The laptop is not good at gaming if this continue.

Amazing gaming rig. Superb image processor.
Amazing rig right here. I purchased this machine to process my astrophotography photos and this thing is a dream. It used to take me sometimes hours for my programs to calibrates, integrate and process the hundreds of images used for one astrophoto. This guy right here cut that time down significantly. It’s also a great gaming computer. This is the first machine I’ve had that I can use the max graphics settings for a game and have no lag or stall while maintaining a pretty high frame rate.

Fan noise
Performs great but fan runs louder than my previous laptop , and runs constantly. I don’t notice with headphones in but others in the room notice.

Beautiful Laptop
First of all, It’s very aesthetically pleasing to look at. I like the futuristic design of Alienware and I’ve always wanted one in the past but was unable to get one. I finally got one two weeks ago. The first day I got it I tried to play games and they would not play. I called dell support and I was on the phone with them for 2 hours. We figured out what was wrong with it. It had outdated files that are needed for gameplay. This is a brand new laptop. That shouldn’t be happening. Apparently they aren’t checked to see if they run properly before they are sent to people. This is too expensive of a laptop to not be working out of the box. Other than that I love it. Also I was supposed to get a free game called Tom Clancy Rainbow Six Siege. I never got the code that they were supposed to send.

Constant crashing
I’m honestly disappointed with this. During start up, the laptop crashed four times before I could even finish setting up Windows. Since then, it’ll randomly crash in the middle of gaming, on Netflix, even just idle sometimes. I’ve talked to two Dell customer service representatives for solutions, and neither have fixed the issue. Another issue has come up recently too: the screen will flicker to black for half a second every so often while in a browser. When the laptop actually works, it runs really well. The graphics are smooth and beautiful, no audio issues, and the RGB effects are flawless. I would be very impressed if the other issues were resolved.

Just what I was waiting for! A very capable multi-purpose laptop for travel/work and home.
This is my second Alienware M17 R3, the last one was from 2015. The biggest drawback of the 2015 edition was the weight and space it required when traveling on airplanes all over the world. It was big, heavy (~8 lbs excluding power brick), capable and mostly reliable. The 2020 version of the M17 R3 builds on all the capability and performance aspects of the prior model but it is noticeably lighter (~5 lbs, excluding power brick). The 2020 M17 R3 has smaller screen bezels and a more narrow form factor which I know will make it easier to travel with. The new 330 watt power supply weighs almost as much as the laptop itself and is the largest laptop power brick I have ever owned. Evidently, the new M17 R3 will function with my older and lighter 240 watt power supply and is sufficient for my needs when on travel.

M17 R3
This is my 2nd Alienware laptop. My last one after 5.5 years had a power issue and burnt out. I purchased the I7 10875, 32MB, 2070S version of the M17r3 and am very happy with the decision.

If you’re reading this, you already want one.
I’m gonna assume anyone reading this wants one, and curious about which config to get. Here’s my rig; i9, 32GB memory (soldered!), Nvidia 2070 Super, 2TB RAID0, the $30 extra keyboard that gives you per key control of the lights (worth it), and the FHD display for faster response time (gaming). I figure I could always hook up an external 4k display should the need present itself (plenty of ports), like maybe the new curved display they sell. This system should last 3-5 years easy. Pros: lightning fast, no bloatware, great keyboard, the lunar light color is refreshing, looks better in person than the photos, the thickness is the perfect height for typing, solid hinge on the display, Alienware Command Center makes it easy to setup hardware profiles for each game, my favorite is being able to choose your fan speed for quiet vs performance gaming. Cons: The Power Brick looks like your typical Dell brick with a blue LED light, would be nice to see what Alienware designers could come up with, and I realize this is a cost savings to leverage existing supply chain. Alienware Command Center a bit confusing, as others have said, but if you’re a gamer, you already have the aptitude to master it. Fans have a high pitch to them, even at low speeds, it bothers my wife, but doesn’t bother me, though I can hear it, too. It’s not hard to drown it out with the speakers which are acceptable, not exceptional, they do the job. Is it a good value? Absolutely, when you consider the engineering needed to package all this together, it’s more challenging than building a desktop. The real issue is once you have one, other members of your family will want one, so I guess that could get expensive, though these machines would last longer so overall it could be less expensive than the alternatives.
